When the wave of dry heat inevitably hits Oklahoma, those scorching temperatures are just as unbearable to insects as they are humans. It’s no wonder pests are driven to cooler climates, which usually means taking up residence in and around our homes. If summer pests have you running for the hills, there are a few measures you can take. One of the best things people can do is to consider getting some insect repellent to make sure these insects stay away from you. There’s often nothing worse than spending time outside in the summer and having to constantly swat away insects. If that irritates you, it could be beneficial to take a look at the Quantum Health website to see if there are any repellants on there that could make your summer easier. Of course, that’s just one of the issues with summertime. Insects have now started entering homes too. Here are some useful tips to stop them.
Perhaps the creepiest of all creepy-crawlies in Oklahoma, scorpions love two things: darkness and water. Scorpions often enter homes through pipes, broken seals in windows or gaps in doorways, becoming active at night as they search for moisture.
Door Sweep: Perform a quick and easy “door sweep.” In the evening, turn your interior lights off and look under doors to the outside to make sure you do not see any light. If any light is peering through, replace the trim or weather stripping.
Remove Rotting Debris: Scorpions love the damp, dark environment offered by rotting limbs and leaves. Carefully remove any rotting debris in your yard, especially if it’s close to your home’s foundation.
Treat for Other Insects: Scorpions love to chow down on other insects. Ensuring your home is regularly treated for other pests can help control the scorpion population, as well. Acenitec’s quarterly pest control program makes it easy.
Like scorpions, mosquitoes try to hang out near water. They lay eggs near stagnant water and will rest in dark, humid areas.
Control Mosquitoes at Home
Weekly cleaning: Keep any items that collect water frequently cleaned. Things like flowerpot saucers, buckets, pool toys, old tires – if it holds stagnant water, dump it.
Vent open pipes: Use a mesh with small openings over outside pipe drains to help keep mosquitoes from entering your home.
Get a Party Spray: If you’re entertaining outdoors, call Acenitec for a Party Spray. We’ll come out 24 to 48 hours before your event and treat your yard with a solution that helps controls mosquitoes, gnats, and other flying pests.
